Microneedling Contraindications

Contra-indications

Always check the contra-indications as this could limit or prevent the treatment from taking place, such as: –

  • Conjunctivitis
  • Cold Sores
  • Impetigo
  • Allergy to Products
  • Active/Severe eczema/dermatitis/Psoriasis
  • Roaccutane
  • Broken Skin
  • Chemotherapy/Radiation
  • Sunburn
  • Scabies

Contraindication considerations

  • Anti-coagulants including warfarin, fish oils, aspirin, ibuprofen – extended recovery will be required and where possible patients may want to reduce anti-coagulant medication 2- 4 days prior to treatment

  • Dermal fillers – treatment can occur 14 days either side of the injection procedure

  • Injectables – including Teosyal, Sculptra, Artefill – treatment may be performed 2 months either side of injection procedure

  • Herpes simplex – do not perform treatments while active sores are present.  Treatment s may be performed on non-active conditions.  Affected clients are recommended to use an over the counter treatment such as zovirax to prevent a possible breakout

  • Cosmetic surgery – treatment can be performed 4-6 months post-surgical procedure

  • Muscle relaxant/ wrinkle reduction injections, including Botox – treatment may be performed 10 days either side of injection procedure

  • Laser resurfacing/hair removal/ tattoo removal – treatment may be performed 2 – 3 months either side of ablative laser and 2 weeks to 2 months for non-ablative laser

  • Intense pulsed light IPL/photo rejuvenation/hair removal – treatment may be performed 2 weeks – 1 months either side of IPL procedure

  • Radio frequency RF skin tightening – treatment may be performed 2 – 3 months either side of ablative RF procedures or 2 weeks to 2 months for non-ablative RF procedures

  • Dermabrasion – Treatment may be performed 2 months either side of dermabrasion procedure

  • Deep peels – Treatment may be performed 2 months either side of deep peel procedures

  • Microdermabrasion – Treatment may be performed 7 – 14 days either side of microdermabrasion procedures

  • Medium peel depths – Treatment may be performed 7 – 14 days either side of microdermabrasion procedures

  • Derma balding/Dermaplaning – Treatment may be performed 7 – 14 days either side of microdermabrasion procedures

  • Electrolysis/diathermy – Treatment may be performed 7 – 14 days either side of microdermabrasion procedures

  • Tattooing/cosmetic tattooing – Treatment directly over tattooed areas must be avoided

  • Spray/self-tanning – Treatment may be performed 7 days either side of tanning procedures

  • Hair removal i.e. waxing. sugaring, plucking., threading, depilatory creams -Treatment may be performed 2 – 3 days either side of hair removal procedures

  • Resurfacing gents – including, but not limited to alpha-hydroxy acids, beta-hydroxy acids, resorcinol, azelaic acid – products may be resumed 4 – 7 days post procedure

  • Antimicrobial agents (including isopropyl alcohol, peroxide, ethanol, isopropyl alcohol) – products may be resumed 4 – 7 days post procedure

  • Retinoids including retinol – products may be resumed 4 – 7 days post procedure

  • Bleaching agents – products may be resumed 4 – 7 days post Dermapen procedure

Clients who are prone to herpes simplex (cold sores), are recommended to apply an over the counter treatment such as zovirax to prevent possible outbreaks prior to treatment

Gentle shaving over the treated area may be commenced 12 – 24 hours post procedure, if required.  Male clients undergoing facial needling treatments are advised to shave up to 12 hours prior to the procedure.

 

IF YOU SUSPECT A CLIENT MAY HAVE A SKIN IFECTION, DO NOT CARRY OUT THE TREATMNET AND REFER THE CLIENT TO THEIR GP.  NEVER ATTEMT TO DIAGOSE A CONDTIONAS YOU ARE NOT QUAIFIED TO DO SO
