Aqualyx Explained

What is it?

Fat dissolving are a safe, effective injection treatment that reduces fat cells in the treated area. It produces long lasting results, which means you can banish those annoyingly wobbly bits.

They can be used to treat small, exercise resistant, pockets of fat around the chin, chest, abdomen and thighs. It is very effective for body contouring, but is not a treatment for weight loss.

Products are made up from a number of different plant-based compounds that have been refined in a lab environment. The solution dissolves the membranes of fat cells in the treated area. The fat cells become unstable and break open. The fatty acids contained within the cell are then eliminated by macrophages (part of the body’s immune system) and the liver.

Who’s it suitable for?

If you are maintaining a healthy lifestyle and are close to your ideal body weight but have isolated stubborn areas of fat then this treatment might be suitable. Popular areas that we treat are double chins, moobs, saddle bags, inner thighs, cankles and abdomen – including defining a six pack.

If you have significant weight then fat dissolving injections are not suitable, but other body contouring treatments could be offered. If you have recently lost significant weight then the area concerning you may be loose skin which we can improve with skin tightening treatments.

Fat dissolving  is not suitable if you:

  • Have diabetes.
  • Have liver or kidney disease.
  • Have active skin problem in the area to be treated.
  • Are taking blood thinning medicine e.g warfarin.

How soon do you see the results?

The number of treatments required varies depending on the size of the fatty deposit. Typically, 1-3 treatments for small areas, such as the jowls and under the chin, and 2-8 treatments for larger areas such as the thighs. Treatments are spaced at 10 to 12 weekly intervals. Your results will show 8 weeks after your final treatment which is when you will have a complimentary review with your practitioner.

Is this permanent?

Whilst the body can regenerate fat cells – the process is very slow. So once fat cells are removed from a localised area your results are as good as permanent. However, if you do not continue to maintain a healthy lifestyle then your body will put on weight in other areas of your body where fat cells remain.

What is involved in treatment recovery?

Immediately after treatment you may appear red and swollen with some bruising on the treated area. solutions work by causing an inflammatory reaction in the fat cells which can result in swelling for 3-5 days. Therefore, if you intend to have a facial treatment, e.g. double chin where the swelling may be obvious, you may wish to organise time away from work or social engagements.

You will be able to reduce the swelling by using a cool pack wrapped in a clean cloth for a maximum of 20 minutes each day.  You cannot use anti-inflammatory tablets for 48 hours after treatment as this will work against the treatment. The treated area may feel tender and firm for up to 8 weeks post treatment.

During recovery we recommend that you avoid:

  • Swimming pools, spas and saunas for 3 days.
  • Physical exercise for 10 days.
  • Any other aesthetic treatments for 2 weeks.

How do I know it’s safe?

Aqualyx was developed by Professor Pasquale Motolese, Vice President of the Italian Society of Aesthetic Surgery and Medicine who presented it at the Aesthetic Medical International Congress in Milan in 2004.

Aqualyx has been given CE approval for use in the UK which means it meets the health and safety standards required by the European Union. Since 2009 Aqualyx has been used in over 2 million treatments in over 49 countries. It has a strong safety record supported by sound medical science.

Aqualyx in the bottle

AQUALYX is an injectable treatment of 12alfa-dihydroxy-5beta-24-oico cholinic acid sodium salts, which is a modified compound of cholinic acid. It is not a simple solution of deoxycholate. It is being marketed for Aqualysis or Aqauplasty treatment as a means of body contouring.

The ingredients are a polymer from 3, 6- Anhdro-L-Galactose and D-Galactose (0.5%) buffer systems (4.2%) , sodium salt of (3a, 5a, 12a ) – 3, 12- dihydroxy-5-cholan-24-acid (7.5%), water for injection purposes (87%) and sodium chloride (0.8%)

The buffer system within AQUALYX ensures that the 12alfa-dihydroxy-5beta-24oico cholinic acid sodium salt is delivered to the target area.

Deoxycholic acid has been used in various fields of human medicine since its discovery. Present also in the human body, deoxycholic acid is used in the emulsification of fats for the absorption in the intestine.
