Outcome 5: Be able to have knowledge of endocrine system – (THE WORKSHEET ABOVE COVERS ALL THE CRITERIA BELOW) 

  1. Describe the function of the endocrine system (what is its primary function?)
  2. Label the diagram: location of the following glands: pituitary, pineal, thyroid, parathyroid, thymus, adrenals, pancreas (islets of langerhans) and gonads
  3. For each of the above endocrine glands state the functions and hormones they secrete. Hormones: functions – pituitary (oxytocin, vasopressin, growth hormone, adrenocorticotrophic hormone, luteinising hormone, follicle stimulating hormone, prolactin, melanin stimulating hormone), pineal (melatonin/serotonin), thyroid (triiodothyronine, thyroxine, calcitonin), parathyroid (parathormone), thymus (thymosin), pancreas – islets of langerhans (insulin, glucagon), adrenal cortex (glucocorticoids, mineralocorticoids, androgens), adrenal medulla (adrenalin, noradrenalin), ovaries (oestrogen, progesterone), testes (testosterone).
  4. State the effects and influences of the endocrine system on the body: the menstrual cycle, life stages (puberty, pregnancy, menopause), stress, disorders – acromegaly, addison’s disease, amenorrhoea, cretinism, cushing’s syndrome, diabetes insipidus, diabetes mellitus, gigantism, goitre, graves disease, actinomycete, hirsutism, myxoedema, polycystic ovarian syndrome, seasonal affective disorder (sad), stunted growth, virilism.
