Desquamation

Desquamation

The epidermis is continually renewing itself, pushing cells upwards until they reach the surface. Once on the surface, the dead cells come off very easily in a process called desquamation. You can help to remove the dead skin cells by rubbing the dry skin with a towel or other equipment and products – this is also known as exfoliation. Getting rid of old cells has the following benefits:

  • It allows the new cells to come to the surface.
  • It helps keep the skin healthy and able to fight infection.
  • It encourages cell renewal.

This is helpful because as we become older, the cell regeneration process becomes slower. This means that the healing and renewal of cells is less frequent and the condition of the skin gradually deteriorates. It also helps to minimise fine lines.

Exfoliation helps the products that are applied after to penetrate the skin better too.

Products and equipment used to aid desquamation include:

  • Exfoliators – these can be made from a variety of both natural and synthetic ingredients.
  • Body brushing or Exfoliating gloves – this should be done once or twice a week, prior to moisturising. For the body and not the face!
  •  Professional Treatments– these can include dermaplaning, chemical peels and other facial treatments.
  • Brush cleansing – again, this should be done once or twice a week, prior to moisturising.
