1.13 Define the terms relating to anatomical position

The anatomical position is a standard reference position used in anatomy:

Anatomical Position: The body is standing upright, facing forward, arms at the sides, with palms facing forward and feet together.
Anterior (Ventral): Towards the front of the body.
Posterior (Dorsal): Towards the back of the body.
Medial: Towards the midline of the body.
Lateral: Away from the midline of the body.
Proximal: Closer to the point of attachment or to the trunk of the body.
Distal: Further from the point of attachment or the trunk of the body.
Superior: Above or towards the head.
Inferior: Below or towards the feet.
