1.1 Describe the basic functions of the skeleton

The skeleton has numerous essential functions:

Support: It provides a rigid framework that supports the body and maintains its shape.

Protection: It protects vital organs. For example, the skull protects the brain, and the rib cage protects the heart and lungs.

Movement: Bones work with muscles to produce movement. Muscles attach to bones, and when muscles contract, they pull on bones to produce movement.

Mineral Storage: Bones store minerals such as calcium and phosphorus, which are essential for various body functions.

Blood Cell Production: The bone marrow, particularly in long bones, produces red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.

Energy Storage: The yellow marrow in bones stores fats, which can be used as an energy source within the body.
