Contra-indications

Prior to performing a treatment you must always do a skin analysis. There are two main reasons-

1. To check for contra-indications that may prevent or restrict your treatment.
2. To work out the best treatment plan for the client to meet their expectations.

Contra-indications are broken down into two categories-

1. Prevent- this means they are often contagious and a treatment cannot be performed.
2. Restricts- this means that you can still do a treatment but adjustments will need to be made to the ‘standard’ treatment routine.

Examples of contra-indications that may restrict treatment: Recent scar tissue, eczema, psoriasis, hyper-keratosis, skin allergies, cuts, abrasion, bruising, styes.

Examples of contra-indications that may prevent treatment: Skin disorders such as bacterial (impetigo), viral (herpes simplex), fungal (tinea), systemic medical conditions, conjunctivitis, severe skin conditions and eye infections, acne, boils and herpes (zoster and warts), parasitic infections (e.g. scabies), known allergies

From the list of ailments below write a brief description of the condition and then tick the correct box-

• Prevents- stops a treatment from happening
• Restricts- can still go ahead but you may need to make adjustments to the normal routine
• Treat- to adjustments needed and does not stop the treatment.
